Students awarded prestigious engineering scholarships
We’re incredibly proud of Alannah M and Abeni O in Year 11, who have each been awarded a coveted Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
They triumphed in the face of tough competition from around 1,500 fellow applicants to receive one of about 350 scholarships, which are designed to inspire and support outstanding future engineers.
The rigorous process saw the girls submit an initial application, sit an online aptitude exam and take part in a 20-minute interview to secure their scholarships, which are sponsored;Ìýstudents receive support from their sponsor in a range of ways, from work experience to career planning.
Physics teacher Andy Tickner, who oversees the School’s Arkwright applications, said: ‘I am delighted at the success Abeni and Alannah have had in attaining an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship with the Smallpeice Trust.
‘For over 30 years the Arkwright programme has sought to inspire future engineers and break down barriers and stereotypes within the field. With around 1,500 applicants for approximately 350 scholarships our students have demonstrated exceptional potential in being selected. They have impressed academics and industry experts in an independent project, aptitude examination and interview alongside their preparation for their GCSE examinations.’
Mr Tickner added: ‘Abeni and Alannah have continued the School’s excellent record over the past five years and join our previous scholars Lauren, Marie-Louise, Harriet, and Isabel who are at various stages of their own engineering journey, from A level study to industry.’
